Prednisone

Prednisone is a synthetic corticosteroid drug that is used as an immunosuppressant. Prednisone affects all of the immune system. Prednisone is used to treat certain inflammatory diseases. It is usually taken orally but can be delivered by injections. Prednisone has a mainly glucocorticoid effect. Prednisone is a prodrug that is converted into prednisolone (this is a steroid) in the liver. Prednisone prevents the release of substances causing inflammation in the body.

Prednisone is used to treat allergic disorders, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, skin conditions, lupus, psoriasis and breathing disorders.

Prednisone can, therefore, be used in autoimmune diseases, severe asthma, juvenile dermatomyositis, severe allergies, angioedema episodes, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, Still's disease, ulcerative colitis, Bell's palsy, pemphigus and sarcoidosis, Crohn's disease, uveitis, various kidney diseases such as nephrotic syndrome, and to prevent and treat rejection in organ , migraine headaches and cluster headaches.

Don't use prednisone if you are allergic to it, or if you have a fungal infection.

Prednisone can weaken the immune system, making it easier for you to get an infection or worsening an infection you already have or have recently had. You must tell your doctor about any infections or illness you have had within the past several weeks.

Prednisone is used for treatment of inflammatory conditions or diseases in which your immune system plays an important role. Corticosteroids like prednisone, are commonly used to suppress the immune system. Prednisone may be used as a replacement therapy in patients whose adrenal glands are unable to produce sufficient amounts of cortisol.

While using prednisone, avoid contacting with people who are sick or have infections.

Vaccines may not work as well while you are taking a steroid as prednisone, so don't use prednisone, if you receive a "live" vaccine.

Don't stop using prednisone suddenly, because you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your pharmacist about how to avoid withdrawal symptoms when stopping prednisone.

Prednisone may be used as an antitumor drug. Prednisone is very important in the treatment of acute multiple myeloma, Non-Hodgkin lymphomas, lymphoblastic leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma, and other tumors in combination with other anticancer drugs.

Prednisone is also used for the treatment of the Herxheimer reaction. You may need it for the treatment of syphilis, and to delay the onset of symptoms of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Use prednisone with care if you have one or more of following deseases: kidney disease, malaria, a thyroid disorder, liver disease, glaucoma or cataracts, osteoporosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, tuberculosis, depression or mental illness, herpes infection of the eyes, stomach ulcers, ulcerative colitis, or diverticulitis.
