Doxycycline is used in prophylaxis against malaria. You should not use doxycycline alone for treatment of malaria, even of the parasite is doxycycline-sensitive, because the antimalarial effect of doxycycline is delayed. The delay is related to its mechanism of action that is to specifically impair the progeny of the apicoplast genes that results in their abnormal cell division. How should I take doxycycline? You should take doxycycline exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or for longer periodthan recommended by your doctor. Follow the instructions on your prescription label. Take doxycycline with a full glass of water (8 ounces). Do not take doxycycline with milk or other dairy products, unless your doctor has told you to. Dairy products can make it harder for your body to absorb the drug. Some brands of doxycycline may not have restrictions about taking them with dairy products. Do not break, crush or open a delayed-release capsule (Orecea). Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release doxycycline slowly in the body. Breaking or opening the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time. Take doxycycline for the entire length of time prescribed by your pharmacist. Before the infection is completely treated, your symptoms may get better . viral infection such as the common cold or flu will not be treated with doxycycline. Even if another person has the same condition you have, don't give this medicine to him. If you need to have any type of surgery, you may need to stop using the medicine for a short time. Tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are taking doxycycline. When doxycycline is no longer needed or expired, throw it away. Using expired doxycycline can cause damage to your kidneys. Store this medication at room temperature away from heat and moisture. What happens if I miss a dose of doxycycline? Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time, if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose. Doxycycline side effects You must get emergency medical help if you have one or more of any of these signs of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of your face, tongue, lips, or throat. If you have any of these serious side effects, stop using doxycycline and call your doctor at once : dizziness, severe headache, body aches, fever, chills, blurred vision, peeling, severe blistering, flu symptoms, urinating less than usual or not at all... Doxycycline is not approved for use in children under the age of 8 years. It is recommended that doxycycline not be taken at the same time as aluminum, magnesium, or calcium based antacids.
